Top 5 DIY Halloween Costumes For Toddlers and Kids

Author: Harrison Fray

Halloween is almost here and you still have time to get your kids some trick-or-treat Halloween costumes. But come to think of it, it isn't really practical to buy a costume from the kids' department at your local mall since the following year your kids will be bigger and taller, and their costumes would be out-of-date.

A better and practical way to solve this problem is to DIY or do it yourself. You can save a lot from DIY Halloween costumes for kids because you won't be wasting a couple of dollars for each kid each year. Even if you do spend some dollars, it won't be such a waste of money afterwards especially if you will just purchase small items to complete the look of your kids' costumes.

In order to come up with costumes from ordinary clothing and/or materials that are available at home, you should think first of themes or characters for your kids. If you are like most parents who do not have the time to do some arts and crafts project, you can always use what's available and easy to make.

Below are 5 DIY Halloween costumes that are easy and cheap to assemble:

(1) The Black Ninja

This is very simple to create and you only need black long-sleeved shirts, black pants or sweatpants, black socks and shoes [sneakers preferably] and black ski masks. They may look like burglars if they don't have ninja swords and you can make these out of cardboards and some silver paper. You can also add each a colored-belt using thin scrap fabrics that you can get from craft stores or from your local seamstress for free.

Your kids can form a band of ninjas and you can also alter the color of their costumes by using colored shirts and pants.

(2) The Break Dancer

Now, this is pretty easy. Look into your kid's wardrobe and most likely he has a beanie, a hooded jacket and a printed shirt. Jeans and sneakers are always good segments for this look. You can also add a single glove to complete the look and of course an appropriate hairstyle. Your kid may look like an ordinary kid this way, but adding a prop sound system made of cardboard that he could carry will do the trick. Make this prop sound system his goody bag by making it from a box with an opening and latch to secure the goodies inside.

(3) Mummy kiddos

Some prefer to use ordinary tissue rolls in creating a mummy, but using rolled paper towels are better since they are tougher and wider. Roll the paper towels around your kids' body, limbs and head, but do not cover the face, you can use make up to create a scary face. Make sure that your kids' are wearing shirts and tights or shorts underneath. They should also wear socks and white sneakers, if they have white.

You can use ordinary glue to stick the paper towels together. Leave some paper towels hanging and put makeup on each kid.

(4) Zombie kids

Creating a zombie clan is also very easy. You only need imagination and makeup to create a scary look for each kid. As for their clothes, choose the ones that are already very worn out so you can put holes and tear some parts. You can layer their costumes by using good shirts underneath and the torn ones on top. You can add blood and grime colors using water-based dyes that can be bought in the grocery or craft stores. Do this a few days before trick-or-treat day so the dye can dry.

(5) Vampire clan

Since Twilight is a popular book and movie, why not create a vampire clan based on this popular saga. You can make your kids look like the Cullens or another clan. It only takes some nifty-looking clothes to match the clan and also face powder to make their skins look pale. You may want to add false fangs to complete the look. No contact lenses for the kids, though. Just make them look like the Cullens by wearing light-colored clothes that are similar in style or you wish them to look like the vicious clans or the rouges, you can make them wear darker attire.

Not all parents have the time to create and design a costume from scratch. But with a little creativity and imagination, you will find that your kids' wardrobe have more than what you need to create a character for him on Halloween.

3 Easy & Creepy Halloween Snacks For Your Kids

Author: Jeremy Miller

If you're a busy mom searching for simple and quirky Halloween snacks for your kids, this article will get you covered. One of the best things about this holiday is that it's relatively easy to play up with food. It excites kids to actually eat stuffs that scare or repel them. Here are some simple Halloween snacks that kids will surely love.

Witches' broomsticks

This type of finger food is so easy to prepare. You will need pretzel sticks, a block of cheese and a pack of chives. To prepare, slice the cheese into strips the size of matchsticks. Put a stalk of chives on the surface you're working. Place the cheese strips along the piece of chives. Be sure to leave about an inch on every side of uncovered chive.

Then, top with the pretzel stick. Pull the chive around the pretzel stick gently as you lift the cheese as well. Next, wrap the ends of the chive together. Arrange it on a serving platter, attached side down. Chill first before serving.

Monster Pops

This quick and exciting treat will make kids crave for more.  You will need big marshmallows, lollipop sticks, sweet white chocolate, frosting, a block of floral foam and green food coloring. You can buy lollipop sticks at any of your local party store or craft shop.

To prepare, insert a lollipop stick into each marshmallow. Inside a double boiler or a pan in medium heat, melt the white chocolate and then slowly add a few drops of green food coloring. Stir constantly until it is mixed evenly with the chocolate. Remove the mixture from heat. Dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate until it's coated, but avoid dipping for too long to keep the marshmallow from melting.

Let it stay upright using the floral foam. Repeat the same process for the rest of the marshmallows. Once all have been coated, put in the fridge until the chocolate sets. Then you can start decorating with icing. Finally, stick the lollipops into a real or synthetic pumpkin or serve in floral foam.

Creepy fingers

The beauty of this chewy, crackly treat is that you only need four ingredients to prepare it. Now you will finally have a good reason to nibble on fingers. To create creepy fingers, you will need three eggs, 1/3 teaspoon cream of tartar, ¾ cup refined sugar and whole almonds. To prepare, preheat oven to about 200 degrees. Then, line your baking pan with parchment paper.

Separate the egg whites from the yolk, beating only the egg whites inside your mixing bowl using a whisker. Beat well until you get a nice, soft fluff. Mix the cream of tartar into the foam well. Add the sugar gradually into the bowl, beating it on high until it forms stiff peaks.

Now, put the mixture in a large, plastic bag. Cut a tiny hole at the tip of the bag and then pipe it on the baking pan shaping it like fingers. Press almond onto the tip of the finger. Bake for about two hours in the oven; until they are crispy and dry.

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

Halloween is all about having fun with your friends and family. Among the best parts of Halloween are decorating the house with hand made crafts. And when these crafts are all hand made, the more the merrier! At times space constraints bar us from this pleasure.

Well, internet is a hub for several ideas. Once you have the ideas and tips and tricks, you can use your innovative skills to make the ideas even more interesting. Creativity and imagination is the key to make your decorations as exclusive and attractive and spooky as you wish to. Here are a few ideas to get started:

1. Tissue Ghosts

This is perhaps the writer's favorite. Take a piece of Kleenex. Gather it together such that it forms a bulb at the top and the bottom should be splaying out. Shaped almost like a ghost! Now, with a rubber band twist and tie to maintain the shape of the bulb. You can also uses a garbage bag for the same. This becomes the ghost's head. So just tie it as tight as possible! Now grab on a black magic marker to dot in the eyes, nose and mouth. The Kleenex ghost is ready to spook around. You can make loads of these and hang around the house. This would impress your friends & family and friends. You would be able to boast as a Halloween crafts pro!

2. Egg Carton Bats

This idea is quite simple. Get some simple stuff like egg cartons, a pair of scissors (safety scissors in case the child is younger), and black paint. Cut out 3 egg cups from the egg carton and ensure that they remain attached. Check that the egg carton must be clean. Now the outside cups would turn in to two bat wings - simply cut their front and back. Now paint the whole thing in black. Attach goodly eyes for the real impact or simply paint the eyes using white paint. Here, the middle cup becomes the face. Now make a hole on the top of the middle cup and pass a string through it. Make a sturdy knot so that it doesn't slip through this hole. Now, put the string in this hole. Finally hang the bats where ever you feel like.

Try using a combination of waterproof paint and Styrofoam egg carton. These bats are perfect to decorate the trees outside the house.

Now on experiment with what ever wastes you get your hand on at home and develop your own spooky fun decorations for Halloween!

Classroom Halloween Crafts - How To Get Started

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

If you teach students, like me, then you will forever be on the look out for easy classroom crafts that your students can make when Halloween nears. The best way to keep children occupied is by involving them in an activity in which they get to make something on their own and the most opportune season would be Halloween. This is a great time to get your class to make decorations that can make the classroom look festive and vibrant. There are innumerable classroom crafts that you could try. Here are some crafts that your your students can make and which I have personally found to be a hit with the children.

One great classroom craft that you can make is the fun ghost. All you need to use is white construction paper and the feet of your students. Make the students remove their shoes and stand on the white construction paper. Trace the outside of each foot but leave out the toes. If possible, get the kids to work together at tracing each other’s foot. Then make the cut the footprints out. The ghost’s head will be the foot heel. They can use black construction paper or permanent marker to draw the ghost face. The remaining bits of white construction paper left from the foot tracing can be used as the arms. The students can glue the arms of the ghost. Punch a hole on top of the ghost’s head and pull a string through it so that the ghost can be hung from the ceiling, doors and other surfaces to make the room spooky.

In addition to ghosts, you can even have some bats flying around your room. This is another Halloween craft that has worked well with the students. First, take an egg carton. Ask the kids to cut out three successive cups from the carton using scissors. Make sure that the three cups remain attached. Cut out the back and front of the outer two cups to form the wings. Then paint the bat black using black paint. Once the paint has dried, the children can either draw the eyes using white paint or paste googly eyes for the bats. Then pull a string through a hole punched at the top of the central cup and tie it. Make sure the string does not pull at the hole. Hang the bats along with the ghosts and your classroom will be full of great Halloween crafts.

These are just a few of the various classroom crafts that you can try out. There are many other crafts that will thrill your students and drive them to accomplish more. A lot of students have told that even their parents were thrilled when they took their creations home. You will, of course, have to ask the students to bring their own supplies, as this is to be expected while planning a classroom craft project. Let your kids exercise their imagination and express their creativity any way they want.

Egg Carton Crafts - Creativity Out Garbage!

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

We normally dispose off the egg cartons in the garbage. Why not put them to good use and turn them into funky crafts? A good way is to make Halloween decorations from egg cartons. For that matter, these crafts can be used for any celebration. It is a fun activity, which kids enjoy very much, and helps you to bond with them while they explore their creative talents. Here are a few samples of what can be done with egg cartons:

1. Spooky Bats:
Spooky bats can be hung outside on trees or in the house. You can involve your children in this activity. Take a cardboard egg carton or a Styrofoam one and cut out three cups, leaving them attached side by side. Cut out the front and back of the outer cups, these form the bat wings. Paint the carton black and stick on some beady eyes or draw the eyes with white paint. Make a hole on the top of the central eggcup and run a string through it. Knot up the end so that it does not slip out through the hole. Hang up the bat and watch it fly around in the breeze!

2. Creepy spiders:
A creepy spider can be made from a single cup of the egg carton. Just detach one cup from the carton. Using the sharp point of a pair of scissors, cut out four small holes on each side of the cup. Put a pipe cleaner into each of the four holes and twist it so that it remains secure. These are the legs of the spider. Draw the face of a spider on the front of the cup and also paint the body. You may use black color to paint the carton and then decorate it accordingly.

3. Egg Carton Caterpillar:
This is not strictly a Halloween craft, but it can be made to add to the novelty of the decorations. An egg carton caterpillar is very easy to make and most kids will love making it. You will require an egg container used for a dozen eggs. Cut out the carton in half, leaving six eggcups attached together. Decorate each cup with paint, glitter or sequins in the form of a caterpillar. For the first cup, draw a caterpillar face. Insert pipe cleaners into holes cut out in the first cup, to form antennae. Your caterpillar, or rather, bookworm is ready to crawl around!

Egg carton crafts can be made very easily with a little imagination and ingenuity. It is a good way to get children interested in arts and crafts making and discover their creative talents in the process.

Another cute religious craft that is also easy to create involve kids. First, you need to take a round lollipop like Tootsie Pop. This forms the ‘neck.’ Make the hat by gluing the green felt at the top. Draw a smiling mouth, the nose and the eyes and your very own scarecrow is ready.

After this, take strips of paper with bible verses written on them such as the Psalm 118:6 – I will not be afraid; The Lord is beside me or Psalm 32:7 – You protect me from trouble; You are my hiding place. Attach these papers to the scarecrow by punching a hole through them and pulling yarn.

Halloween Crafts For Adults - Let Your Imagination Go Wild!

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

A fun activity during Halloween is to decorate your home with hand made art and craft decorations. With a little imagination, one can make wonderful decorations to beautify the house and give it that festive look during Halloween. It is not necessary to be an expert at craft making, but a little imagination and ingenuity will go a long way to succeed in this project. A quick search on the Internet for ideas on homemade decorations will speed up your imaginative powers. You can come up with some creepy looking decorations by making use of simple household items. Most often, people like to transform their homes into haunted houses.

The yard is the best place to start with Halloween decorations. You can turn it into a creepy cemetery. You can give it a ghoulish appearance by putting 'tombstones' all around it. These can be simple plywood cut out into half- spheres. Attach some nails to the bottom, or push them down into the ground so that they stand up. You can paint them black and put some scary writings on them. The lighting in the yard can also be adjusted to throw eerie shadows over the yard. A few 'ghosts' made up of white sheets tied on to bushes will do the trick. Balloon Ghosts in white with attached bells can be left to float in the breeze. Their haunting chimes may scare even the strongest hearted person!

Halloween Crafts for the indoors can be made easily. One way to get a spooky effect in the house is to drape a fine white cloth, artistically painted with a ghost face, on the windowpane. Bats, artificial cobwebs and witch cutouts can be put up on the walls or hung from the ceiling to complete the creepy effect.

Many of these crafts can be made by kids too. However, if there is a need to use power tools for creating them, it is best left to the adults to do the job. Children can be involved to do simple things like painting or gluing on glitter, beads and sequins. This can be a fun activity done together to create something unique.

Your creativity is limited only to your imagination. Use your imagination and creativity while putting together Halloween crafts. As adults, your creations will be much neater since you are now agile while using your hands. Let the kids participate as well. There is nothing better than having a family activity to bring everyone closer! Have fun and enjoy your time with the family during Halloween.

Smart But Cheap Halloween Decoration Ideas

Author: D. Halet

You do not have to be a good crafter to be able to make many great Halloween crafts that will make your holiday joyful. Halloween suggests pictures of spooky ghosts, black cats, dark witches, and flying bats.

You can recreate some of these images with fun and simple crafts.

The best part about making Halloween crafts is that the whole family can make them and it can give you some time to spend together. Lots of Halloween crafts can be done by almost any age child. For instance, your toddler can help out and learn new skills like cutting, drawing, and coloring.

Of course, you need some crafting supplies from the store. Here is the basic craft equipment needed:

* Several craft paintings: black, white, orange, etc. (pots and spraying cans)
* Gold and silver paint (spraying cans)
* Colored pipe cleaners
* Black, white, silver and gold markers

Obviously, most homes already have basic craft supplies like scissors, tape and glue.

So, let's begin: it is going to be fun!

Spiders

To make these spiders, you need an egg carton.
Cut all the egg cups.
Paint them black.
Paint their eyes with white or orange paint.
Make four small holes on each side of the spiders.
Insert a black or colored pipe cleaner in each hole and stick or glue them to the spider.
Give the shape you want to the pipe cleaners

Pumpkin boxes

Find as many small pumpkin plastic containers as you want.
Fill them with candies.
Voila! Treats are ready to be given to kids who will ring on your bell on Halloween Eve.

Colored Pumpkins

Here is a very special idea that will allow you to renew your Halloween ornaments while saving a lot of money. You probably already have ceramic pumpkins. Rather buying new Halloween ornaments, paint your old ones according to your needs: gold or silver paint for a luxurious decoration, for example.

You may also want to paint them in black or white. With a black, white, silver or gold marker, draw some shapes on these new pumpkins such as black cat, white witch, black mansion...

Kids love bright colors so you can paint your pumpkins in several different bright colors such as orange, green, blue, red, yellow, etc. Draw Halloween figures on these pumpkins. For teenagers decoration, paint pumpkins with metallic colors, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, and so on.

Pumpkin Jar

If you already have one or more, fill a glass jar with small plastic or ceramic pumpkins; alternate pumpkins with maple berries and leaves.

Do-it-yourself Halloween Lights

Here is an almost free Halloween craft! Paint small jars in black, white and orange. Draw some Halloween shapes on them and insert a tea light candle in each jar. For instance, paint a white jar, draw Scream murderer's eyes and mouth and voila, you have an original ghost light. Place the Halloween candles on a black tray, insert mini pumpkins, maple berries and leaves, etc.

If you have larger jars, you may paint them as well and pour in Christmas lights.

Halloween Candelabra

Paint candelabra with black paint.
Add orange candles.
Hang cobwebs on the candelabra for a spooky Halloween effect!

Halloween Centrepiece

You will need to use a bread basket in order to make this item.
Fill it with some maple leaves.
Add cobweb, mini pumpkins, spiders...
You may keep the basket for Thanksgiving: you will only have to replace cobweb and spiders by grapes and pine cones.

Halloween Tree

Put bare branches in a vase.
Paint small Christmas tree balls black, white, and orange.
Draw Halloween shapes on them.
Hang the balls on the branches.
You may also make your own Halloween tree ornaments such as ghosts, black cat, witches, and spiders cut out cardboard. Paint them and hang them on the tree.

Tip: make a uncommon Halloween garland with popcorn painted orange.

Witch Hat

If you still have a pointy black hat from last year, reuse it by sticking Halloween items such as fake hands, spiders, cobwebs or other spooky items and pin it to the front door.
