Since When Is Green A Neutral Color? - Home Decor And The Environment

Author: Ron Askotzky

Surely some of you are wondering how on earth green goes with any color scheme and the finicky among you are just cringing at the thought of bright green décor in your well appointed living rooms. Read on...

For those not familiar with the term "green" it refers to a natural, organic, eco-friendly item or product. Hence, the subject of, at least, the first part of this article is how earth friendly décor has a moral and aesthetic place in any room of our home! Green décor may be an item of art or a functional piece that is made from recycled materials or from natural, sustainable resources.

Those already attuned to conservation and the environment are well aware that there are many websites and stores to learn about and purchase green products. These folks also know that one does not have to downgrade the quality and beauty of their décor for it to be eco friendly. We can combine ecology and elegance to both beautify our home and protect the planet at the same time! While we can surely display our children's crafts made from recycled and natural items we can be assured that there are many other beautiful, green curio, mantle and center pieces available to decorate any room in any style.

No matter the style there are numerous décor options including items made from natural fabrics, stone, renewable sources of wood and other natural growth, so called junk and recycled metals, glass and more.

Now that we have touched upon earth friendly décor that brings pleasure to mankind and shows compassion for the environment there is another type of décor which brings gratification to both the purchaser and the crafter.

Rather than buying the commonly available mass produced décor found in many stores one should consider purchasing handcrafted décor. While handcrafted décor may often be more expensive, its purchase provides needed income to hard working mom and dads. Some handmade décor will be earth friendly as well!

Where to find handcrafted décor:

• Craft fairs and markets

• Local craft shops and galleries

• Shops and websites selling Fair Trade products

• Websites selling country crafts, handmade or handcrafted gifts, décor and collectibles

Visiting markets, fairs and shops are also an enjoyable way of spending a day off. While vacationing, particularly in the countryside or "small town USA", you will come across charming shops often in or connected to the homes of the crafters themselves. Pack a lunch and plan a day of visiting local shops, attractions and picnicking. Fall is a particularly beautiful time for craft excursions. The countryside is bursting with color and the Halloween and Christmas crafts are on show! Do not forget your camera!

Another source of crafts are those made by disadvantaged crafters primarily in third world countries. There are many talented crafters whose works are being sold in shops and online. Some are sold via non profit organizations while others are imported and retailed by for profit businesses. Fair Trade organizations provide certification to some organizations and businesses who maintain their rules of fair trade practices. You can visit some of these fair trade organizations online to learn more about them. Many other businesses are not certified but do provide their crafters with fair wages and help to make a true difference in the quality of their crafter's lives! While overseas be sure to visit the many outdoor craft markets where you can meet the crafters and find some great buys!

When planning to purchase décor, gifts or collectibles be thoughtful of the needs of those around us whether it be a local crafter, a disadvantaged crafter in Africa or the environment. In the end you will more greatly appreciate your purchase and will bring pleasure to others as well.

Making Christmas Memories

Author: Jo Mark

Remember when you were a kid, and how anxious you were for Christmas to get here? Things were less hectic then. People did more things together as a family. Today, in many cases, both parents have to work and time is at a premium. Many kids spend as much time with the baby-sitter as they do with their own family.

During the Christmas season, make it a point to plan some special activities as a family. Forget about those chores around the house. The laundry will wait and there is nothing good on TV.

One nice Christmas activity is looking for a Christmas tree. Do some research and locate the nearest Christmas tree farm. Dress everyone warmly, pack two or three Christmas CD’s into the car, and hit the road. Crank up those CD’s right away and make sure everyone sings along. Don’t be afraid to have fun. Use a funny voice, make a few funny faces, tickle someone, and most importantly LAUGH.

When you arrive at your destination, grab a saw from the proprietor and head on out. Sing your favorite Christmas carols as you trudge along in search of the perfect tree. If your family is as picky as mine, it will take an hour or more. Again, don’t be afraid to have fun. The funny memories you create today will make your kids laugh for years to come!

After securing the tree, sing Christmas carols all the way home. Have a contest to see who can do the best Santa imitation. See who can come closest to guessing the total number of needles on the tree. (Pretend you know.)

The real magic of future Christmas gatherings will be based on the memories that you create now. Some of my fondest memories involve simple inexpensive things that we did with (and for) our kids when they were young.

Make an effort to create memories that will last a lifetime! It doesn't have to be expensive. Our annual Christmas tree excursion is an example of the fun things you can do as a family that can bring a lifetime worth of laughter.

Get involved with your kids, do crafts, projects, and activities with them. I recall one activity; using nothing more than an inexpensive piece of cloth, we created a gift for our five-year old. It was a simple inexpensive gift that we made for less than a dollar. The real value in the gift was the wonderful story that we crafted about the object. Her squeals of delight and the look of absolute amazement on her face as she discovered it on Christmas morning was priceless. What's more, she was the envy of her neighborhood friends when she showed them her precious treasure!

You can create lasting memories in many ways. For starters, there's a great website for young children. It's called Santa's Place. It's a daily journal of Santa's activities that started on October 1. In it, Santa talks directly to your child (or grand-child). He asks them questions, fills them in on how the elves and reindeer are doing, sings songs, etc. Your children will love you for it!

How To Sell Your Crafts Online

Author: Catherine Stabler

Crafters are always looking for new opportunities to sell their crafts and the Internet offers them an amazing opportunity to sell their beautiful unique handmade items to a worldwide customer base looking for handcrafted gifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

So how does the average crafter go about selling their handcrafted items? Well if they are tech savvy and are willing to take the time they can build their own web site. You can register your own dot com or dot net name for under $10.00 per year. Web hosting is inexpensive and there are many free ways of advertising, but using this method it can take months, even years before you start getting enough traffic to your site to start selling your crafts.
The crafter can hire a webmaster to build a web site for them, and use pay per click search engines to get instant traffic to their site, but this can cost thousands of dollars per month.

The easiest way for a crafter to start selling online is to open a craft shop at an online mall, but be aware, the online mall will not bring you instant success. You still have to make an effort to promote your online business. Some crafters have a tendency to treat the craft business as a hobby, so you will have to make a choice. Do you want a hobby or a business? If you choose a business then you have to work at making it successful. Treat your online store as you would treat a brick and mortar store. If you opened a brick and mortar store in a mall would you stock it, walk away and forget about it?  Your online store needs to be tended, you need to add new products on a regular basis, your descriptions detailed and lots of crystal clear pictures.

What the online craft mall will do for you is give you a professional looking site where you will be up and running and ready to start selling instantly, you will also have traffic from around the world coming to your store and checking out your handmade products. Your online shop gives you a place where you can start sending your existing customers to view your new products. When you meet new prospective customers at your craft shows etc., you can tell them they now can buy from you year round at your online shop.

Hobbies-Important To Allow Kids To Make Their Own Hobby Choices

Author: tnisanjulata

Getting kids involved with hobbies is important. There is so much more than school and video games. Children should always be encouraged to partake in outside endeavours that they find to be fun and exciting. A hobby can be anything at all that one does for self enjoyment. Most kids have a number of extra curricular activities that they have an interest in. In fact, they can have so many that it becomes difficult to narrow it down to what they want to try the most. It's important to allow kids to make their own hobby choices. It can be tempting for parents to try to sway them into a certain hobby but that really is not beneficial to anyone.

Dance is a great hobby for kids to get into. It doesn't matter whether or not they are girls or boys, dancing is rewarding for all kids. The fact that there are so many kinds of dance makes the choices substantial. For more details www.dream-revealed.com Everything from ballet to jazz and even hip hop style dancing is perfect for children. Lessons don't have to be forced or mandatory. If this is something your child would enjoy, consult local dance instructors for child friendly classes.

Many recreational centers offer drama programs which can be just the thing to help kids burn off excess energy. Drama and the performing arts are wonderful for learning through acting out the stories of others. Children tend to be better at dramatics than some may assume. Everything from musical theatre to comedy can be taught to kids of all ages. When a child shows a penchant for performing, the interest should be encouraged. It takes a lot to get up on a stage and act. If your child has that ability, further its growth with drama lessons or a theatre group.

All children seem to enjoy art such as painting or drawing. It's a regular part of most school education and brings out the inner artist in your child. Having art supplies at home for your child is a good way to provide options other than electronic games or the internet. Colouring books, canvas and paints should be kept at home for the child that loves to create. For more details www.caring-for-your-hamster.com A variety of other crafts related to painting would be things like working with plasticine, clay or sculpting. Try doing some of these activities with your children in order to enhance quality family time through creative works.

nd writing go hand in hand when it comes to kids. They are necessary skills in life and should be practiced as much as possible. It can be difficult to get children into reading and writing regularly. However, if you have one of those kids that can't get enough books then make sure they have a healthy supply readily available. A library card can make all the difference in the world. There are also plenty of great writing contests and groups designed just for kids. Encouraging your child's potential is one of the best things you can do for them.

How To: Make Foam Refrigerator Magnets

Author: Shelly Hill

If you are looking for an inexpensive craft project to make with children, you will want to try out this craft idea. Within a matter of 20 minutes, you can make several foam refrigerator magnets.

Appropiate Age Group: 4 and up

Here is what you will need:

Coloring books (featuring simple designs such as flowers, animals, cartoon characters, etc)
Child Safety Scissors
All Purpose White Tacky Glue
Wiggle Eyes
Beads, Buttons, Sequins, Feathers and other miscellaneous crafting trinkets
Foam Sheets (buy 1 of each different color to match your designs)
Magnets
Fine Tip Black Sharpie Marker

For the project that I made with my nephews, we selected a coloring book that had animal pictures in it for preschool aged children. You will want to cut out the pattern by cutting close (but not on) the outline shape.

We selected the following animals: frog, pig, monkey, cow, puppy and a lamb).

For the purpose of this project, I will refer to the cow refrigerator magnet that we made.

Select a sheet of foam to match the color of your animal, in this case, a white piece of foam. Trace around the pattern by placing the reverse side of the pattern down onto the foam sheet. Once you have it traced, use the scissors to cut the shape out by cutting on your traced line.

We then took a scrap piece of peach colored foam and made a nose for our cow and glued it into place. Above the nose, glue on 2 wiggle eyes. Take the black fine tip Sharpie marker and draw black 'cow' spots on the cows body and head. We also used the marker to color in the cows tail and hooves. To finish off your cow, glue a 2" piece of magnet onto the back and let dry.

Try to be creative when adding accents to your magnets, you can use feathers, beads, buttons, sequins, charms, ribbons and other left-over small trinkets from other craft projects.

Arts and Crafts Ideas: Foam Sheet Glasses Case

Author: rankland

To make the glasses case, you will need the following simple materials:  a square of craft foam, plastic or large blunt needles, lanyard lace or thick yarn.  Cut two rectangles from the foam, each 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.).  With a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, leaving one short side unpunched.  Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam.  The holes need to line up so that the two pieces can be laced together.  If you are preparing the craft for small children, you should make the holes yourself.  Otherwise, the crafters can do this step if you have enough pairs of hole punches.

At this point the crafters can cut decorative shapes from other colors of craft foam, or you can buy sets of ready-cut foam shapes.  If you are doing the craft at a special event, like vacation Bible school, choose shapes that echo the theme of the event.  For instance, if the Bible school or camp has a cowboy theme, find shapes that fit well, such as boots, cowboy hats, and stars.  Let the kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired.  You might also like to provide beads or sequins to glue on as well, especially if the crafters are a little older.

The next step in this arts and crafts idea is to thread the plastic needle with the yarn or lanyard lace.  Yarn might be a little easier to handle, but lanyard lace is shiny and attractive.  In a pinch, some teachers of small children use a bobby pin as a needle.  It is certainly a safe alternative.  Simply loop the yarn through the opening and use the open end of the bobby pin as if it were the point of the needle.  The children can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this arts and crafts idea into a necklace purse, simply attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle.  Kids will enjoy using this case as a place to store secret notes and small objects.  If they'd rather, they can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses.  Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting for all.
