The Advantages of TiVo/Recorded Programming for Children

Author: Kari Hoopes

Television is not the best form of entertainment for our children. This we know. If it were up to us our children would be constantly enveloped in books, crafts, pretend play, and other such mind expanding activities during the day. However, television is still there in our lives for one reason or another and our children certainly do enjoy watching a fun program on TV. I've recently discovered the joys of TiVo and all the advantages it offers to me as a parent. Advantages such as eliminating commercials, having ready a prerecorded list of educational children's shows, and being able to filter out the rest of unwanted television.

We've had TiVo in our home for about a year now and I have a two-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter. Before consenting to having satellite TV, with all of its hundreds of (and mostly useless) channels, we had very little, if any, television in our lives. Starting out as newlyweds we decided to have no cable television at all. We only watched rented movies and built up a healthy collection of shows to watch on our DVD player. It was fun and easily done. Then came a baby. I didn't work and was home most of the time with our first baby girl. So we decided to get the basic channels for about ten dollars a month. Then, came our baby son, and as my daughter also grew up we started to discover the world of children's television programming and it was nice to have some healthy shows that our kids enjoyed watching occasionally. When we eventually subscribed to TiVo, I was very skeptical of having that amount of available television in our home. However, I was surprised to discover that TiVo does in fact offer many benefits to the scrutinizing parent like me.

First of all, TiVo can completely eliminate commercials. This is great when we want to watch our favorite crime show late at night or we're watching a movie on television. We just forward through all the commercials to get to the program. But even so much more beneficial is the elimination of commercials in children's programming. With TiVo, you can record Little Einsteins on the Disney Channel or Curious George on PBS and have no commercials. This is wonderful because most commercials really are unhealthy for children of any age, especially very young minds. A commercial's fast paced, high movement nature has been linked to facilitating HDD and destroys children's attention spans. When children are exposed to constant high paced commercials their mind gets used to that sort of viewing and has trouble calming down and being able to do things like reading a book or sitting down to do their homework. So when parents can eliminate such destructive "noise" from their children's TV programs, both the parents and the children are much better off.

Just as you have the ability to eliminate commercials from TV viewing, you also have the power to completely eliminate ALL unwanted channels and programming. You can literally pick and choose what programs you want your children watching and eliminate all access to regular, unedited television. Instead of having your children just turn on the TV in the morning and flip through unending channels of programming they shouldn't be watching or hearing, looking for something interesting to watch, you can have a ready list of fun, yet educational shows for them to pick from - free from all the "crud" and commercials regular television mostly has to offer. Your children are happy because they have all these pre-recorded, commercial free, programs to choose from and you're happy because they are picking from a list of shows of which you already approve, and when it is over, it pauses, prompting the children to get up and do something else.

We, as parents, know that television shows, even the best ones for children, aren't always the best past-time activities. Yet, when they do watch television it's nice to know you can still be in control of what information goes into their young, impressionable minds.

The Value Of Imagination In Early Childhood

Author: Kari Hoopes

As infants grow into toddlers and toddlers grow into preschoolers their imagination explodes. Everything around them suddenly becomes something they can transform into their "pretend world." Necklaces become princess tiaras on their head, under the kitchen table in suddenly a cave to hideout in, and your whole household can be transformed into a jungle using their stuffed animals. A child's imagination is an important learning tool in their growth. Through imaginative play they learn in-directly about real-life situations, develop their vocabulary, and develop the ability to create, organize and perceive.

When a small child holds a doll or stuffed animal in their arms and pretends it is a baby they are learning about a real life situation. They are learning how to nurture and take responsibility for others. The same goes for a pretend kitchen or a little boy using his Bob the Builder toy tools. These children are learning how their parents interact in particular situations and trying to mirror it in their play. In addition, when an adult encourages their child to pretend and somewhat leads them on their imaginative journey it is no longer just play, but a great opportunity to develop vocabulary, counting, and anything else that can be incorporated.

For example, you and your child decide to turn your house into a jungle safari. Place stuffed animals and pictures of animals all around the house to be discovered. Dress-up and use a flashlight to seek out different animals. Teach the child new animal names, count how many animals you find, look up fun facts about the animals on the computer or in a book. Once you find all the animals and you're at the end of your pretend safari, read animal books together in a made-up tent. Really, there is no limit to what you and your child can do to develop their minds through imaginative play.

Through developing their imaginations, children also become capable of creating a concept, organizing their thoughts about it, and then perceiving it into their play. We, as adults use this tool in our everyday, especially at work. We create concepts, organize our thoughts, and make it happen. Who knew that simple child's play when we were young could help us develop such useful knowledge. School and other methods help us fine tune it along the way, but it is when we are very young that our minds are so palpable and capable of learning lifelong concepts.

It has been said that "A child's work is play." If this is true, then their imagination is one of the most important tools in early development. Therefore, it becomes imperative to sharpen that tool and encourage children to create worlds of their own and to go on such things as pretend jungle safaris or on missions to find hidden treasure. And, as stated before, when an adult also takes part in their pretend world and leads them and shows them new things and concepts, the possibilities for learning are endless.

My Funny Valentine

Author: Mimi Rothschild

Home school students, like all children, have a natural inclination to go out and spend lots of money on designer valentines with their favorite cartoons or toys featured prominently on the box. Why spend all the money when you can make a neat personalized home-made card that can be cherished forever? Encourage your home school students to use their imagination when creating their own cards. Each child can develop their own sense of creative style in their valentines. Also, make sure they understand that Valentines Day isn’t about secret crushes or flirting. Home schoolers need to understand that the holiday should be more about spreading the love of Christ and reflecting his sacrificial love with brotherly and sisterly love for our fellow man. Agape love is the name of the game here.

Now, let’s start making our Valentines. The simplest way to go about this is to take red, white, or pink construction paper and fold it in half. You can go the extra mile by cutting your card into the shape of an animal, flower, heart, or other design. Then, grab some crayons, glitter, construction paper, string, sequins, glitter, and other craft supplies and go to town adding some personality to your card.

You can add more personality by using different fabric patterns and magazine clippings. Encourage your home school students to create collage art by finding images and words that evoke the spirit of Valentine’s Day. You can even make a little pocket for small gifts like a Hershey’s Kiss or homemade jewelry. Throw in some stamps, stenciled writing, and clip art to finish off the package.

Top it all off with a Bible verses about love. This will ensure that the recipient understand the true message of Valentine’s Day.

Once your cards are made, have your home school students make mailboxes out of shoeboxes to collect their valentines. If you belong to a home school co-op, this will make for a fun activity.

Home Craft Business : Business Start up Guide

Author: John Hughes

Want to start a home craft business? Are you the type of person that spends all of your free time working on a craft? Maybe it is something like knitting or quilting, or something more simplistic, like putting together Popsicle sticks to make the figure of an animal. No matter what your secret passion is with crafts, there are ways to turn your part time hobby into your full time business!

The first thing that you will want to decide is what crafts you really like to make, that are simple enough for you to do a lot of. This will help you to determine what the best job will be for you. It may take some time for you to decide what will sell and what will work best, but over time you will find that there are certain crafts that you like making more and that people like buying more.

From this point, you can take several routes to making sure that your craft sells. The first option available to you is to get involved in the local events that are taking place. There are several summer and winter festivals that are designed just for people like you to sell their crafts. You can make your crafts to specifically cater to these festivals, and also offer your other types of crafts to make the most. Once you begin going to several of these festivals, you will begin to notice a steady increase in your income, allowing you to slowly turn your craft into a full time job.

Another option available to you for your craft is to open a store. This can either be in your locality or it can be online. All you will need to do is to begin reproducing the crafts that you like the best, turning them into a line of products. After you begin to get several items, you can turn them into an inventory list. Make sure that you are prepared with the right amount of inventory and are able to reproduce what you need when the demand is high. Once you have done this, you can make sure that you advertise effectively to specific target markets in order to sell everything that you make.

Most believe that their craft is only a part time hobby. However, it should be kept in mind that everyone is always looking for gifts for holidays and throughout the year, as well as a special keepsake for a friend, just because. The simple trick to make your craft into your job is to just begin doing it! You will realize that you can truly do what you love in this home craft business.

Valentine’s Day Through Rose Colored Glasses

Author: Alyssa Thiessen

Love is in the air. Strains of Bryan Adams and Meatloaf can be heard wafting down pink-laced aisles filled with heart boxes of various shapes and sizes. Wistful girls sigh as they wander aimlessly through the maze of greeting cards and jewelry. Restaurant phones begin to ring with reservations, and flower shops stock up on roses. It’s Valentine’s Day at last.

Although a widely celebrated, widely embraced holiday, many critics insist that Valentine's Day is, despite the rosy hue granted to it by Hollywood and media, highly overrated. “Nothing but a glamorized money grab!” cry the opponents of the commercialized holiday. It is referred to as a day for the lonely or, perhaps worse still, a meaningless, contrived occasion resulting in unrealistic expectations and unfair pressure.

The noble beginnings, rooted in the tale of St. Valentine, have, according to those nay sayers, been completely subverted by greedy businesses capitalizing on the romantic gullibility of consumers and on notions of traditions tied up in expensive gifts. The price of roses skyrockets, the shelves fill up with overpriced, poorly-made chocolate, and men everywhere are suddenly buckling under the pressure of being solely responsible for reading the mind of their significant other and ensuring that no unfulfilled expectations are left to spoil what is supposed to be the most romantic day of the year. But failure and disappointment, those jaded many would insist, is inevitable in a holiday that is, in its current state, designed to make money and create disappointed hopes.

All these things are true enough, but despite the shameless salesmanship of the holiday, I love Valentine's Day. I always have, even as a single girl. I love it, right from the over-priced flower display to the shelves stacked with candy-hearts to the sappy love songs written for suckers everywhere. I don’t know how you can be a hopeless romantic and not fall for all the shiny glitter and red-pinkity of the official day of love. I walk down the supermarket isle and sigh lovingly at all the cute teddy bears set up along the shelf. I imagine lacey undergarments and pink bracelets and hearted necklaces. I think of cards and valentines given out to both lovers and friends. I relive things like my first crush, my first kiss, the first time I realized I was in love. I remember romantic movies and daydreams and roses. A cold February day is warmed by nostalgia and sweet sentiments.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that love is not about reds and pinks and flowers and chocolate. Love is not found in the soft plushy fur of a big white teddy bear or the cinnamon sweetness of a candy heart. Love is, of course, about friendship, kindness, showing people you care about them - not just on a single given day of the year, but every moment you can. It's about making every day count. But perhaps Valentine's Day, in all its showy silliness, also has its place. Perhaps it's a day about celebrating the wonder of love itself - a day to think about how much love we have been given and to remember to share that love with others. After all, we appreciate our mothers every day of the year, but we still wish them a Happy Mother's Day. Therefore, cynics, I thwart your ever-so-rationale dissatisfaction, and instead once again embrace the packaged travesty that is our Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Happy, happy Valentine's Day!

Fashionable But Inexpensive Halloween Decoration Ideas

Author: D. Halet

You do not have to be a good crafter to be able to make many special Halloween items that will make your holiday joyful. Halloween suggests pictures of spooky ghosts, black cats, dark witches, and flying bats.

You can recreate some of these images with fun and easy crafts.

The best part about creating Halloween crafts is that it is something that the whole family can do and it can give you some time to spend together. Lots of Halloween crafts can be made by almost any age kid. For instance, your toddler can help out and learn new skills like cutting, drawing, and coloring.

Of course, you need some crafting supplies from the store. Here is the basic craft equipment needed:

  • Various craft paintings: black, white, orange, etc. (pots and spraying cans)
  • Gold and silver paint (spraying cans)
  • Colored pipe cleaners
  • Black, white, silver and gold markers

Obviously, most homes already have basic craft supplies like scissors, tape and glue.

So, let's begin: it is going to be fun!

Spiders

To make these spiders, you need an egg carton.
Cut all the egg cups.
Paint them black.
Paint their eyes with white or orange paint.
Make four small holes on each side of the spiders.
Insert a black or colored pipe cleaner in each hole and stick or glue them to the spider.
Give the shape you want to the pipe cleaners

Pumpkin boxes

Find as many small pumpkin plastic containers as you want.
Fill them with candies.
Voila! Treats are ready to be given to children who will ring on your bell on Halloween Eve.

Colored Pumpkins

Here is a very special idea that will allow you to renew your Halloween decorations without having to spend a lot of money. You probably already have ceramic pumpkins. Instead of buying new Halloween ornaments, paint your old ones according to your needs: gold or silver paint for a luxurious decoration, for instance.

You may also want to paint them in black or white. With a black, white, silver or gold marker, draw Halloween shapes on these new pumpkins such as black cat, white witch, black mansion...

Children enjoy bright colors so you can paint your pumpkins in several different bright colors such as orange, green, blue, red, yellow, etc. Draw Halloween figures on these pumpkins. For teenagers ornament, paint pumpkins with metallic colors, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, etc.

Pumpkin Jar

If you already have one or more, fill a glass jar with small plastic or ceramic pumpkins; alternate pumpkins with maple berries and leaves.

Homemade Halloween Lights

Here is an almost free Halloween craft! Paint small jars in black, white and orange. Draw some Halloween shapes on them and insert a tea light candle in each jar. For instance, paint a white jar, draw Scream murderer's eyes and mouth and voila, you have an original ghost light. Place the Halloween candles on a black tray, insert mini pumpkins, maple berries and leaves, etc.

If you have larger jars, you may paint them as well and pour in Christmas lights.

Halloween Candelabra

Paint candelabra with black paint.
Add orange wax lights.
Hang cobwebs on the candelabra for a spooky Halloween effect!

Halloween Centrepiece

You will need to use a bread basket in order to make this item.
Fill it with some maple leaves.
Add cobweb, mini pumpkins, spiders...
You may keep the basket for Thanksgiving: you will only have to replace cobweb and spiders by grapes and pine cones.

Halloween Tree

Put bare branches in a vase.
Paint small Christmas tree balls black, white, and orange.
Draw Halloween figures on them.
Hang the balls on the branches.
You may also create your own Halloween tree ornaments such as ghosts, black cat, witches, and spiders cut out cardboard. Paint them and hang them on the tree.

Tip: make a uncommon Halloween garland with popcorn painted orange.

Witch Hat

If you still have a pointy black hat from last year, reuse it by sticking Halloween items such as fake hands, spiders, cobwebs or other spooky items and pin it to the front door.

Happy Halloween!

Celebrating Halloween With Senior Citizens

Author: Usharani

With just 487 days left for Halloween celebrations, and these celebrations always get bigger and bigger every year. However Halloween can be a stressful period, particularly for the senior citizens who live all alone at home or for those suffering with dementia. Kids in different costumes and people who come up to the door and possibility play pranks - trick or treat, marks this important celebration. Here are some tips to help the elderly; first of all you need to remind them that Halloween is near. When elders don’t have any kids at home, there will be no enthusiasm to enjoy the holidays, and this is no longer a part of their lives and they won’t be able to remember all holidays. Jump in and help with decorations their houses, if you want to get some sprit, do ask your friends to help with the decorations. And don’t forget to ask the elders what kind of decorations they prefer. Witches or Ghosts? Vampires or Zombies? Working on Halloween crafts with a group of elders and friends is a great way to spend wonderful time. But make sure to schedule some time to check out the local stores for Halloween decorations.

Don’t forget to ask them if they like to stay at home during the night of trick or treating. Some elders might enjoy children visiting their homes, while others don’t. Do let them know that, a well illuminated front yard shows that someone is at home to give away candies! Also tell them what can be done, if you run out of candies, and still people keep knocking the door. Based on their independence level, let someone be at home during the night to help with the trick-or-treaters. You can even invite these kids for a lovely early dinner; it will be great to have children in their scary costumes! If you happen to live far away from your grand parents or other elderly relatives, perhaps you may request their neighbor or your friends who are living there to accompany them to the church or invite them over for the get together. If there is no one to accompany the elders, you can bring them to your place for the celebrations.

Always choose the candies carefully during Halloween. Lot of elderly people love to give away candies to those cute trick-or-treaters who knocks the door. Do consider any health related issues such as diabetes while purchasing candies and other kinds of treats. If you get time, give them some assistance for their Halloween candy shopping, it will be fun for both! Don’t forget to include lot of sweet varieties especially if these elders live in a neighborhood with loads of children. Do offer help with the costumes. Senior citizen centers or Church groups might have Halloween parties, so make sure your seniors folks wear a great costume and let it be comfortable, just a nice shirt and a hat will also look great! With little planning in advance, Halloween can be fun not only for children, but even for the elders.

Great Gifts for Teenagers and People Who Act Like Teenagers

Author: Tom Gilbert

When it comes to buying the best gifts for teens this Christmas, the easiest thing to do is to look no further than your own wallet.  Just reach in, pull out a few bills, slip them into an ironic card, and whallah! Your holiday shopping is complete.

However, if you're concerned that your teen might spend this hard-earned dough on something less than savory (as far as I can tell, teens spend their money on expensive sneakers, fast food and joints), you might go one step further: get them a gift certificate to one of their favorite stores (H & M, Forever 21, Hot Topic or Old Navy, among others).  Yet even this method of gift giving leaves something to be desired.  It's so hands-off that it shows you're fairly out of touch with what your teenager wants.

It's best to buy presents for teens that they will actually use and remember for years to come.  Firstly, this means investing in gadgets or electronic devices.

If your son or daughter doesn't have an iPhone yet (and you can afford the high monthly service fees), you absolutely cannot go wrong there.  iPhones are the coolest gadgets of the decade, and possibly the absolute best device since the invention of the laptop.  When other kids see your kid with an iPhone, they will swoon (but hopefully not steal).

Also, the best Apple accessory for an iPhone or an iPod is unquestionably the iPod dock.  These cool, miniature speaker sets can get pretty loud and have good sound quality.  Apple makes both portable and plug-in versions, so make sure you get the one that suits your teenager's fancy.

If you're interested in finding a less expensive gift idea, you might consider buying them some extreme sports accessories.  Teenage boys love skateboarding, riding dirt bikes, snowboarding, and anything else where there's a danger of breaking bones.  Get them something that protects them (or at least makes them look cool) while they're at it.  For instance, you could spring for a pair of Grenade Gloves for a snowboarder, a heavy skate sweatshirt for a skater, or a new helmet with a skull on it for a dirt biker.

Also, you can never, ever go wrong with a couple of extreme sports videos.  My favorites are 'Notice to Appear' by Standard Films and 'Yeah Right' by Spike Jonze.  As you might guess if you've seen any of Jonze's films, (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, and more recently, Where the Wild Things Are) 'Yeah Right' features some pretty awesome camera work.  There's one segment where he somehow erases the skateboards from underneath the feet of the riders so it looks like they're hovering.

It's pretty tough to find good gifts for teenage girls, but you can't go wrong with a digital camera.  Girls are much better at taking lots of photographs than boys, men, grown women, or anyone else on the planet.  You might need to include an extra battery pack with it!

If your kid already has everything but is really into movies, then you could get them gift passes for the theater.  It might encourage their alienation but it also might turn them into the next Spike Jonze!

Valentine's Day for the Homeschool: Valentine’s Day Card Ideas

Author: Mimi Rothschild

It’s always tempting for young homeschoolers to rush to the store and buy overpriced mass-produced valentines featuring their favorite toys and cartoons. Homeschool parents should try to curb this desire by encouraging their children to make their own cards. It is a fun hands-on activity that you can do together as a family. Encourage them to use their imagination to create an interesting personalized style.

Cards are a breeze to make, even for younger homeschool students. Just take a piece of red, white, or pink construction paper and fold it in half. Then, you can decorate the card using glitter, sequins, crayons, more construction paper, and other craft materials. Cut out little hearts and decorate the front of your cards. Use fabric patterns and wrapping paper for a neat effect. Cut your card into interesting shapes like hearts or flowers or animals.

Have your children make collage valentines. Grab a stack of magazines and have them cut out clippings of words and pictures that evoke the Valentine’s Day spirit. Use stamps, stencils, and clip art to jazz things up. You can even create a little pocket in your card for a treat like a Hershey’s Kiss.

Make sure to include a Bible verse about love. This will help your students to keep their idea of love in perspective. After all, there’s a lot more to love than romance, flings, and crushes. These valentines should be about friendship and brotherly love. Check out these Bible verses about love.

Once the cards are made you can do several things to make the card-giving process fun. If you belong to a homeschool co-op, you can have all of the homeschoolers create their own valentine mailboxes out of old shoeboxes. Decorate them in a similar fashion. You can slip valentines in balloons and then inflate them. Students will have to pop their balloon in order to get their valentine.
