How To Make The Body Of A Frame Drum

Author: Victor Epand

Making the body of a frame drum isn't too difficult. People need to make them for various reasons; a class project, a certain authenticity in their musical instruments, or just because they think it's cool. At any rate, it's not that hard. After all, humans have been making frame drums for thousands of years. So it shouldn't be too difficult for a person living in the modern age to manage. However, some approaches are easier than others. The simplest method doesn't involve making anything at all. It just involves going to the local specialty craft store and purchasing a preformed drum hoop. But beyond that, if you want to actually create the frame of a drum, there are two options.

The first method is to make the frame from a hollow log. If you do this, the most important detail is to be sure that you clean out the inside of the log so that no loose wood or rot remains. Once you're done, the resulting shell should be one to two inches thick. A thicker the shell will result in a deeper the pitch in the final drum.

The second method is to make a hoop frame from separate branches. This process is more involved, but it also allows you to more specifically determine the size and shape of your drum frame. After all, with the log method, you're basically limited to what you can find in the forest. To make a drum frame from braches, here's what you do. Cut two branches, each about 36 inches long and an inch in diameter. Ash, cedar, willow, hazel, wild rose runners, sycamore and birch are all good options.

Boil some water in a kettle and once steam begins to form, pass one of the braches repeatedly through the steam. As the branch becomes more pliable, very gradually bend it to form a circle the size of you want your drum to be. Wood can usually be bent once for every five minutes of steaming. Any faster, and you're likely to break your frame. Once the stick has been bent all the way into a circle, tie both ends together so that they overlap. Repeat the process with the second stick, measuring it against the first so that the circles are the same size.

Cut another branch into about a dozen pieces, each approximately two inches long. Using small headless nails and Elmer's Wood Glue, nail and glue these pieces between the two hoops as spacers about every two inches, spaced evenly around the hoop. Then go back around your drum head with a small nail punch and sink the heads of the nails down below the surface of the wood. This will prevent them from snagging or tearing the rawhide. Place a weight on top of the frame so that it does not change shape as it dries, and let the whole thing dry thoroughly in a warm place with good air circulation. Once it's dry, your drum frame is complete.

Creative Christmas Gift Ideas for Her & Him

Author: Krista QQ(www.123giftfactory.com)

Tired of endless mall walking in search of a perfect Christmas gift that is nowhere to be found? Hate giving gift cards or gift certificates and cash just because it seems impossible to come up with anything better?

This holiday season, find unique ways to let the people in your life know that you care. Get creative, get personal and get fun; get a gift that will bring joy to her or him you love this Christmas.

Projects to Do and Make

Instead of toys that quickly lose their appeal, projects to make and do entertain during the process of creation and then become all the more special because they were made by the recipient. A craft set for making beaded jewelry, a T-shirt or canvas bag and special fabric crayons and pens for decorating, or a small set of wood working tools and pieces of cut wood can provide hours of entertainment. These gifts also often teach useful skills and encourage artistic abilities. Some kits can be purchased with the supplies and tools included. For a more personalized gift or to monitor the quality of the tools included a gift giver might choose the supplies and tools and pick a useful bag or box that could serve as storage later.

Homemade Items that Everyone Needs

Sometimes a gift item of a usable, consumable product with a personalized touch can be both affordable and appreciated. Children’s artwork can be scanned and made into calendars or greeting cards. Lip balm, bath salts, or bath oil can be made with items from the grocery and craft store. For kids simple recipes abound for play dough, homemade bath crayons, and homemade sidewalk chalk.

Since everyone needs to eat, ready-to-make meal mixes such as soup in a jar or muffin and bread mix can be great gifts as well. The gift of something useful need not be boring. It can be a playful twist on the usual or something a bit more extravagant than expected. But the element of usefulness ensures the gift will be appreciated rather than stored away.

Gift Tickets to Local Attractions, Museums or Performances

Gifts of tickets to local attractions, museums, or performances can encourage the appreciation of the arts. Families might appreciate an annual pass to a zoo or Children’s Museum near their home. Some performing arts centers offer packets of tickets to various events. Concerts or even movie theater tickets can be great gifts especially as families cut back on the entertainment budget and such attractions become a rare treat.

Instead of focusing on things to purchase, gifts that focus on activities can bring smiles and avoid both the shopping pitfalls and the return lines.Gifts that interest and give fun to the recipient need not be expensive or even purchased. With some planning and creative ideas, thought, smart gift givers can get through Christmas with some money left in their pocket.

July 4th - 4th of JULY ...

Celebrate the Fourth of July Differently

Author: Mitch Johnson

Are you planning a party for your friends and want it to be simply the best party ever? Take advantage of the big boom day of fourth July, celebrate with a great banging of fireworks with your friends gang on your lawn.

Siss, Boom, Bah! The Fourth of July, Hurrah! That's the spirit of the day that we all used to celebrate with a great banging of fireworks from dawn until nightfall or until we ran out of firecrackers.

In most states this dangerous sort of Fourth of July fun has been banned because of the high casualty lists. But no laws or ordinances have put a ban on fun, so what to do on the Fourth of July? Why not invite the girls and boys over for a Picnic Party on your lawn the weathers apt to be clear and hot, the enthusiasm of the guests will run high, and there'll be no casualty list to mar the fun.

An excellent starter for this yard picnic could be "Find the Flag." Send one of your guests into the house. Someplace in the yard hide an American flag, so that the entire crowd except the absent member knows where it is. Call back the hunter and explain to him that while he hunts the flag the crowd is going to sing "Yankee Doodle" softly when he is far from it, louder as he nears it, and very loud when he gets it. This is a jolly game that youngsters love each one will want his turn at finding the flag.
For real exertion introduce a "Backward Relay." Divide the guests into two groups of equal number. Get about two dozen rolled-up newspapers and lay them on the ground in two rows. The rows should be about eight feet apart and the newspapers should be laid at intervals of about two feet. Contestants must hop backward over the newspapers to the goal and return. When the first player on each side returns, he touches off the next one. The side which finishes first wins the relay. The excitement over this game will run high and the noise will equal that of firecracker days.

By this time the players will be glad to relax a bit. The guests are seated in a circle for the game of "Face." The first player turns to the one on his right and says, "You have a face," to which the other replies, "What kind of face?" The first player then must answer with a descriptive adjective beginning with "a." He could say, "You have an angelic face" or "an attractive face," or if he feels funny he might say, "You have an awful face." The next player turns to the one on his right and says, "You have a face." The second player answers the inquiry "What kind of a face?" with an adjective beginning with "b" and so on around the circle and through the alphabet. The same adjective cannot be used twice. Anyone who can't think of an adjective beginning with the right letter before the conductor counts to ten must leave the circle and sit in the center while the others finish the game. The game gets very exciting towards the close when only two or three of the sharpest are left to seek new adjectives.

Many youngsters are in awe of fire fighter, fireworks, firecrackers etc. For this youngster a Firework picnic party is a great way to celebrate. The above given are some of the most jolly games that youngsters loves to play.

What Kind of Gift Do Children Want for Christmas?

Author: D. Halet

I work in an elementary school and the winter weather in our beautiful rainy country does not allows children to play in the garden. So, I always have to look for activities to occupy the children.

Last week, on a rainy day, children were unable to play in the garden, I thus tried to entertain them by asking them what they wanted as a Saint Nicholas gift.

Belgian people - as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, France and some Eastern Europe Countries - celebrate and dedicate Saint Nicholas (SinterKlaas) to children. Saint Nicholas is the Great Patron of Schoolboys and penetrates into our houses on December 6th.

One week before December 6th, each night, Saint Nicholas brings sweets in the slippers of good children (traditional version) or one month before December 6th, he brings many more sweets in the slippers of our good children (this is the commercial version).

Shopping malls also organize Saint Nicholas areas that consist in displaying scenes made from toys; such as train sets simulating real situations or houses full of old fashioned dolls. Children have also the opportunity to meet Saint Nicholas and communicate their wish list to him.

A picture of Saint Nicholas holding our child on his laps generally closes this fairy journey.

On December 5th Eve, parents and children dress the dining room table with a plate full of cookies and a glass of milk for Saint Nicholas, a carrot for his ass.

On December 6th, early in the morning, the glass is empty, the carrot has been eaten, and there are only crumbs of biscuits. Do not worry, parents do not have to eat these sweets and vegetables.

The table is now lined with dozens of toys, sweets, marzipan, chocolate bars...

Saint Nicholas has a companion: Père Fouettard (Zwarte Piet or Black Pete) who punishes wicked children.

Belgian children generally receive clothes and books at Christmas.

It appears that children have an immoderate passion for video game consoles, such as Playstation (3 of course) or WII... while the heroes of American comic strips become the heroes of Belgian children.

Here are the toys kids want to receive as a Saint Nicholas or Christmas gift:

For boys and girls aged of 10 years old and more:

- Playstation
- Nintendo DS
- WII
- XBox 360

If they received the video game console already, they wish to receive video games, such as Dragonball, Street Fighter, Medal of Honor... The young generation seems to love violent games.

Boys aged between 4 years old and 10:

- Jeep or Helicopter
- Tractor
- Batman
- Spiderman
- comic strip heroes accessories

Girls aged between 4 years old and 10:

- Barbie
- Doll house
- Doll accessories
- Books

Some of these children love music and they asked to Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus (sometimes both) to bring them an electric guitar or drums.

A romantic young girl wishes to receive a diary such as the one of Bridget Jones.

As for my fifteen years old son, he asked for books. What kind of books? Manga Comic strips.

All children wish to receive: chocolate, marzipan, candy, etc.

Finally, traditions are important for our children: no Saint Nicholas and no Christmas time without sweets.

Valentine's Day - Allover ...

Great Game Idea’S For Your Child’S Class Valentine’S Day Party

Author: Liz Winter

The Valentine’s Day party is a great party that a lot of kids look forward to every year. It’s full of fun and sweets, plus an afternoon without classroom work. What child wouldn’t enjoy that? If you have volunteered to organize the games for your child’s class party, here is a list of fun games that all the kids in the class are sure to enjoy.

  1. Valentine’s Day Card Box Contest. What kid doesn’t enjoy a little competition? Give the instructions to the teacher a week or two before, that way the kids and their parents have plenty of time to come up with ideas and decorate their box. You could instruct them to use specific colors, such as red, pink, and white or you could limit what time of supplies they use. However you and the teacher decide would be the best way to go about it. The day of the class party you have all the kids vote on their favorite box. You can give away prizes for the best, the prettiest, the funniest, and the craziest boxes.
  2. “I Love My Neighbor, Because…” Game. Have all the kids sit in a circle and give each child a pencil and a piece of paper. Instruct each child to write as many nice things as they can before the time is up about their classmate on their right. Tell them they can write things like, “Suzy always shares her crayons or Bobby always plays games fairly.” Once they understand the instructions, you can set the timer and let them get started. When the time is up, have each child find the Valentine’s Day box of the student they wrote about and put their list in their box. There really isn’t a winner or a loser in this game, it’s just a nice way for the students to be kind to each other.
  3. “Guess How Many Kisses” Contest. Take a glass jar or container and fill in up with Hershey’s kisses. After the jar is full, dump them out and count them, so you know how many are in the jar. Take the jar to the class party and set it on a table with index cards and pencils. Have each child guess how many kisses are in the jar. The child who is the closest wins the whole jar of Hershey’s kisses.
  4. The Incredible Heart Search. Spend the week before cutting out 25 to 30 paper hearts that look pretty much the same, (ex. same color, same size, same type of decorations, etc.), that way the kids won’t confuse them with other Valentine’s Day decorations in their classroom. After you cut them out, go the night before and put them up in their classroom. You can put some in plain sight, some under desktops, and some on the floor, just try to be discreet and be creative. The next day during the Valentine’s party, let the children go around the room and find as many hearts as they can. The child who finds the most hearts in the winner.
  5. Heart Beat. Cut out enough papers hearts for each child and put instructions on the back and a piece of candy taped to the front. The instructions should say things like “hop like a bunny”, “skip in a circle”, or “touch your toes”. The day of the party divide the students up into two teams at one end of the room and at the other end of the room you put the hearts in a pile. Have the students “walk-race” to the end of the room where the hearts are and grab a heart. They must perform the action and then “walk-race” back to their team. Once they slap hands with the next classmate in line, that classmate will “walk-race” to the pile of hearts. This continues until one team wins for doing it the fastest.

The Coconut Messenger; An Original Hawaiian Luau Invitation

Author: Sarah Gasu

Part of the fun when throwing a party is sending out the invitations and the anticipation of a great response. You will often find the more creative and interactive the invitation the more excited the guests will be. A well planned and thoughtful invitation tells the guests you are putting together an equally well thought out party to match and they will really want to be there.

There are many exciting ways to invite guests to a Hawaiian Luau, but here is one I think is quite original, I call it ‘The Coconut Messenger’. Now this one takes a bit of effort, and depending on where you live could also be a bit expensive, but they are certainly worth the extra effort if you want to impress on your guests how cool your Hawaiian Luau is going to be.

The idea is to deliver a whole coconut shell to your guests which must be opened to reveal the invitation hidden inside, the fun is in the opening of the coconut which can be quite a challenge if you don’t know how.

You will need:

  • As many coconuts as you have guests
  • Coloured paper for the invitation
  • Card stock or paper for the instructions
  • Rafia or twine
  • A screw driver, corkscrew or hammer and nail
  • Laminating machine if possible

First let’s make the invite, keep it simple such as a handwritten note, or printed paper using a cool font. Parchment would add a nice touch too.

Once you have created the invitation if you have a laminating machine handy then laminate it as this will protect it, but if not just roll the invite into a tight scroll and wrap in plastic wrap ready to be inserted into the fresh coconut.

Usually a coconut is opened simply by giving it one hard knock in the exact right spot, at which time the coconut simply falls apart into two almost perfect halves. But for the purpose of this exercise we will need to drain the coconut water first as we are going to insert the invitation into the coconut and deliver it unopened.

To drain the water you will need to open one of the eyes, the three spot found on one end of the coconut. You can do this using a hammer and clean nail, a screw-driver or corkscrew. Make sure one of the eyes is opened wide enough for you to insert the invitation scroll.

Now place the coconut over a glass and allow the water to drain, to make it drain faster you can make a hole in the tail end too. Now let the kids drink the water, it is delicious and good for you, and is nice when chilled. When you are satisfied the coconut has been drained long enough you can insert the invitation.

Now for the tricky part, opening the coconut:

Now, being married to a pacific islander gives me the benefit of knowing the secrets to opening a coconut with out sending shards of shell flying in all directions, but this is still a job for grown ups okay.

Your guests will need instructions on cracking open the coconut, after all, opening a coconut when you don't know how can be a tad difficult, so your instructions could read like this:

I am the Coconut Messenger! I have two eyes, a mouth and a tail, and, I have a message inside...Open me!

Hold me in your hand with your thumb on my mouth and my tail facing the tip of your fingers...turn me around till you find my back, an obvious line. Now give me a good hard whack right on my back with a hammer and I will open to reveal my message to you!

Attach the note to the coconut with a piece of twine or raffia and leave on their doorstep. Fun huh!
