How to Develop Your Child's Artistry through Arts and Crafts

Author: Jeff Clark

Nurturing your child’s interests is an important and responsible duty. If your kid shows interest in particular arts and crafts, it is really important that you give support to your child. Don’t forget that if you showed interest and support in something that he does that is very close to his heart, like drawing, he will develop and excel in that particular skill in the future.

Art interests will show at a very young age. If they show interest in coloring, modeling or craft kids made for their particular age, then you have a natural in your hands. Expose your child to as many craft mediums as you can so you can identify the specific interest of your child. Just remember that safety is foremost. Do not give your child art and craft kits that have little parts that a small child can swallow and choke on, cords that he could strangle on, or plastic bags that he could fit into his head that raise choking risks. Buy a kit that specifically says what age the kit is for.

Let’s talk about the value of kids learning arts and crafts. First of all, they develop the self-esteem of children when they see that they have a finished product that you, parents, or other adults appreciate their creation. You can do this by displaying their artwork where many people see them.

So where do you start supporting your child in arts and crafts? As mentioned, you have to make sure that the kit that you buy should fit your child’s age, interest and maturity. Once you have bought his or her very first kit, find a storage system like a plastic drawer with wheels that your child can keep conveniently under his bed.

The exact materials that your child will need will depend on what type of craft your child is into. If she likes scrapbooking, you may include rulers, protractors, glue and scissors into the kit. For puzzle-making or modeling, coping saws and measuring tools should be part of the kit.

When your child gains experience in what he or she does, you may want to invest in more permanent materials like adhesives that stay longer, tacky glue or rubber cement. You should provide your child with the right books or arts and crafts instructions that will help him or her get started with new projects. You don’t need to buy all these; there are many references available in libraries and in the Internet. You may even look for arts and crafts guilds and clubs in your area where your child can be a member of. This is one surefire way of your child developing his special skills.

Those are only some of the ways of supporting your child in his special interest. The important thing is show interest and appreciation of your child’s interest in this healthy endeavor. Many life skill will be developed if your harness arts and crafts skills in your child.

How To: Make Foam Refrigerator Magnets

Author: Shelly Hill

If you are looking for an inexpensive craft project to make with children, you will want to try out this craft idea. Within a matter of 20 minutes, you can make several foam refrigerator magnets.

Appropiate Age Group: 4 and up

Here is what you will need:

Coloring books (featuring simple designs such as flowers, animals, cartoon characters, etc)
Child Safety Scissors
All Purpose White Tacky Glue
Wiggle Eyes
Beads, Buttons, Sequins, Feathers and other miscellaneous crafting trinkets
Foam Sheets (buy 1 of each different color to match your designs)
Magnets
Fine Tip Black Sharpie Marker

For the project that I made with my nephews, we selected a coloring book that had animal pictures in it for preschool aged children. You will want to cut out the pattern by cutting close (but not on) the outline shape.

We selected the following animals: frog, pig, monkey, cow, puppy and a lamb).

For the purpose of this project, I will refer to the cow refrigerator magnet that we made.

Select a sheet of foam to match the color of your animal, in this case, a white piece of foam. Trace around the pattern by placing the reverse side of the pattern down onto the foam sheet. Once you have it traced, use the scissors to cut the shape out by cutting on your traced line.

We then took a scrap piece of peach colored foam and made a nose for our cow and glued it into place. Above the nose, glue on 2 wiggle eyes. Take the black fine tip Sharpie marker and draw black 'cow' spots on the cows body and head. We also used the marker to color in the cows tail and hooves. To finish off your cow, glue a 2" piece of magnet onto the back and let dry.

Try to be creative when adding accents to your magnets, you can use feathers, beads, buttons, sequins, charms, ribbons and other left-over small trinkets from other craft projects.

Non Scary Halloween Fun For Toddlers

Author: Jason Lewis

Halloween is a time when ghosts, witches and goblins seem to pop up everywhere. Sometimes the festivities can be a little too intense for younger children.  Here are some non-spooky Halloween activities that are lots of fun for toddlers to do.

Create Fun with Colored Pasta

  • You can add 1 cup of uncooked pasta noodles to a plastic bag.
  • The zip top plastic bags are perfect for coloring macaroni noodles.
  • In a plastic cup mix 2 tablespoons of isopropyl rubbing alcohol and 4-6 drops of food coloring together.
  • Add this liquid to the noodles, zip the bag and shake gently until the color is absorbed by all of the pasta noodles. This will take 2-3 minutes.
  • Set a colander in the sink and pour the colored noodles into it very carefully. The excess color will be drained from the noodles.
  • Then you can use a slotted spoon to lift the noodles and place them on a cookie sheet that you have lined with some paper towels.
  • Let the noodles dry overnight before using them.

The best colors for Halloween crafts will be noodles that are colored orange, green, yellow and black.

Let your toddlers glue the pasta onto paper plates to create jack o'lantern faces. You can also help them string bracelets that they can wear.

Edible Treats are Fun to Make and Fun to Eat

Use some canned frosting, marshmallows, graham crackers and Halloween candies to create fun treats that can be eaten.

Bean Bag Throw

You will need an old white sheet or tablecloth for this game and some pumpkins that you cut from orange poster board.

Use wide tipped markers to draw some pumpkin targets in several places. You might want to draw some vines and leaves on the sheet with green markers, or just make some circles that resemble bull's eyes. Now spread the cloth on the floor or place it on your lawn. Give the kids 2-3 poster board pumpkins to toss at the sheet. Whoever gets their pumpkins the closest to the targets will win the game.

* If you are using the vines and leaves drawings then the winner is the person that comes closest to landing their pumpkin back on the vine.

Additional Ideas

You can make a simple fishing pole from a small branch and a piece of yarn. Set up a table or a box in the corner of the room and cover it with a Halloween inspired cloth. Have someone sitting behind the table who stays out of view during the game. They should have a supply of small candies and toys with them. Then let each child take turn fishing. Each time the fishing line is cast over the table a small surprise can be tied or taped to the tip.

Put some dry ice in few hollowed out pumpkins and set them around the room. Make sure that toddlers can not reach the pumpkins. The dry ice will produce a smoky haze that will surprise and delight small children.

Recycling Christmas Cards For Arts And Crafts

Author: Darvin J. Hooey

If you are a fan of Mother Nature, you have to begin recycling Christmas cards , Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and other greeting cards too. Many greeting cards are purchased and given throughout these holiday seasons. In spite of the popularity of the web and electronic greeting cards:e-cards, most greeting cards are still made of paper, which of course comes from trees. Unfortunately, these paper cards are only enjoyed for a little while, and then they are trashed! I'm not saying that you must stop exchanging paper cards, but I am requesting that if you insist on using paper cards, why not purchase cards made from recycled paper (or recycled greeting cards), AND begin recycling Christmas cards when you're done with them. This reuse can happen either by taking them to a recycling facility or buy reusing them for your own arts and crafts.

A little research on the web will provide you with numerous local and national paper recycling facilities and charities that will take your used greeting cards. Here, however, I would like to provide to you some of the projects and even gifts that can be made with your used cards. Rather than putting your holiday cards in the trash, they can be recycled to bring entertainment to your family and others.

Here are a few of the many projects you can try:

Bookmarks: you can cut covers of greeting cards with pretty pictures to create your own personalized bookmarks, because buying them can be expensive...

Concentration Game: Many of you have played this card matching game as a kid. Allow your kids to grow and learn with a custom set of cards!

Greeting Cards!: This might sound hard but it's not. Just cut off the covers of cards, removing the page with the writing on it, and then connect the cover to a blank second page. These blanks can be picked up at most arts and crafts stores.

Post Cards: Create holiday postcards by removing the back half of greeting cards (i.e., the page with no, behind the cover). You can then write your personal message and mailing address on the blank side of the cover, and then just add postage. You even save additional money here, since postcards are less expensive to mail than letters!

These represent just a few of the great ideas I've come across. What ideas do you have?

The Significance of Activities For Preschoolers Toddlers

Author: Gareth Williams

Preschoolers are a handful and every mother, teacher and grandmother is always looking for good activities for preschoolers toddlers that will keep them occupied and be educational at the same time. This can be a tall order because finding activities for preschoolers that will appeal to the majority of a preschool class can be challenging, what's more, many sites don't seem to understand that activities for preschoolers toddlers need to be age appropriate and hopefully inexpensive.

When it comes to creating activities for preschoolers you cannot be afraid of making a mess. While not all activities for preschoolers toddlers are messy, it seems to be a talent for toddlers to turn something clean into something messy, so be prepared if you are using anything that includes glue, glitter, macaroni, markers, paint, etc., even if you think that the environment is controlled enough to prevent a mess, you should always be prepared for one when doing activities with younger children.

The activities for preschoolers toddlers that you use should be based on what you want them to learn. For example, if you are teaching coordination, then you might choose an activity that requires the children to get a ball through a hoop. The key to these kinds of activities is to provide an atmosphere of success. Create a large hoop and hang it at a height that is achievable for toddlers. You are teaching coordination, however, if a child gets discouraged they will not participate. Be careful as this may defeat the whole purpose of the activity

While the Internet is a wonderful resource for finding preschool activities, remember that you need to ensure that they are appropriate activities for what your preschoolers are learning, that it is something that they can do without a lot of assistance (which builds confidence), and that is affordable and won't cost the preschool or parents a lot of money to do. Messy activities for preschoolers toddlers is a great opportunity to teach toddlers about personal responsibility and cleaning up, so don't hesitate to use messy activities that kids will enjoy, just make sure that you, the kids and their parents are prepared for the aftermath.

How Arts and Crafts For Kids Can Inspire a Love of Art

Author: Chris Peace

If you've ever had the opportunity to go to an art museum when children were present, you know that most of them aren't interested. The same is true for classical music concerts, literature, or anything that was never shown on MTV or some other cable channel. That's a shame because these parts of our culture have much to offer them. The good news is that you can use arts and crafts for kids to encourage your children to have a greater appreciation of art - one that will last a lifetime.

Talk about Your Child's Artwork

One way to encourage children to have an interest in the arts is by taking an interest in their art. When you dismiss their creative efforts with arts and crafts for kids, you are sending them a message that these things are not important. If you don't care about their efforts, why should they care about the efforts of dead strangers?

Instead, when your child shows you something he or she has created using arts and crafts for kids, talk about the results. Ask your child questions about the color or the subject. Treat their artwork as the work of a creative mind because that's exactly what it is. Then when you go to the art museum discuss the same types of questions about the art there. Your child will be much more engaged in the conversation.

Appreciate Art from Your Child's Perspective

Children are generally very practical when it comes to art. If you've seen their creations using arts and crafts for kids, you know most of them stick to realism. That's why they may not always be impressed with some of the art you're going to encounter in the local museum. If you child dismisses an important work of art as ugly or stupid, don't chastise him or her. Instead, ask for concrete reasons for the dismissal. Say, "What don't you like about it?" instead of "Don't say that! This is a valuable piece of art!"

Remember that not everyone is entitled to an opinion and that includes your child. The more he or she feels able to express that opinion the more creative he or she will become and the less likely he or she is to hate the museum.

Learning to Love Other Types of Art

While arts and crafts for kids can help your child gain an appreciation of artwork, there are other ways to instill a love of other types of art. For example, if you want your child to love literature, don't hand him or her a dusty book. Instead, read to them from the book or watch a well-done film version or listen to the story on tape. These alternative approaches will make the literature more accessible to children and you can help explain what's happening step by step.

Learning to Love Art

One of the best parts of arts and crafts for kids is that they can give your children a reason to love the best of the world's culture and art while possibly giving them the skills to make their own contribution.

Coping with Toddler Night Tantrums

Author: Chad Wilson

Toddler night tantrums are a part of what makes parenthood so difficult. In the middle of the night, your child could just start crying endlessly, disturbing your much needed sleep. Some parents get up and tend to the child, while some just ignore it. However, parents should understand that these tantrums are normal for toddlers.

Toddler night tantrums occur because toddlers cannot express themselves how they want to. This is because they haven’t properly developed their language skills, and so they resort to tantrums. They just simply want to get your attention, and that’s why they cry and cry until you come to them.

The initial response of parents to toddler night tantrums is to lose their temper. However, you should realize that doing so would not do anything beneficial for your child. If you don’t control your emotions, then your child would not be able to control his or hers as well. You need to handle toddler night tantrums with a cool head, if you would want to address the root of the problem.

Once your child starts throwing tantrums, you should always maintain your composure. Talk to him or her slowly and calmly, and kneel down to easily keep eye contact. It is important to make your child feel that the toddler night tantrums are not appreciated, by speaking firmly but not angrily. Just watch out for the level of tantrum that the child is throwing at you. If the tantrum is minimal, it is perhaps best to ignore it altogether to dissuade the child from using crying as a way to get attention, and nothing more.

But of course, prevention is still better than solving the problem of toddler night tantrums. Avoid showing things to your toddler which could catch his or her interest that you can’t give. Examples of these would be anything flashy or food that the toddler could want, but you can’t give. Also, toddler night tantrums usually happen when the toddler is either very tired or very hungry. Always maintain a schedule for the toddler’s resting and eating time, so that the child wouldn’t feel these.

It is important to handle toddler night tantrums with utmost care and consideration. Whatever happens, that crying child in the other room is still your child. You don’t want him or her to be traumatized by an angry parent, so just always remember that your child just wants security and love from you.

4 Rainy Day Craft Projects To Do With Your Children

Author: Shelly Hill

Looking for something to do with your children on those rainy days, when everyone seems to be cooped up indoors? When my daughter was small, we used to do craft projects together. It quickly became a 'rainy day' tradition in our household.

I feel it's important to spend quality time with our children. These days, too many children are sitting in front of a television watching TV shows, or playing video games. I don't find this to be quality family time.

Here are 4 easy craft projects that you can do with your children.

Soapy Bath Crayons

1 c. grated Ivory Soap
1/4 c. warm water
food coloring
plastic cookie cutters

Mix water, soap and food coloring together in an old bowl. Stir the crayon mixture until it begins to stiffen. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead until it's the consistency of a very thick dough. Spoon crayon mixture into plastic cookie cutters or other plastic molds (play dough molds work great too!). Press down firmly. Place the plastic cookie cutters in your freezer for 10 minutes. When firm, pop the bath crayons out of the cookie cutters. Allow them to air dry overnight.

Play Dough

2 c. flour
1 c. salt
4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 c. of water
4 tbsp. oil
food coloring

Place flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, and oil into a large pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until dough comes away from the edge of pan, and makes a soft ball. Cool on a sheet of waxed paper. When cool, add food coloring. Store in plastic containers or in plastic bags.

Finger Paints

2 c. of plastic liquid starch
1 c. of Ivory Snow detergent flakes
food coloring

Combine liquid starch and Ivory Snow in a large bowl. Beat with a mixer until the volume is tripled. Divide, add in food coloring as desired. Store in covered containers in the refrigerator.

Blowing Bubbles Refills

1/2 c. liquid dish detergent
5 c. water
1 container with lid
1 bubble blowing wand

Mix water and dishwashing liquid together in a large bowl. Don't over mix. Pour liquid into empty bubble blowing containers.

Tip: When you spend time crafting, please remember to take photographs. It's a great way to preserve all of these wonderful memories.

Take advantage of those rainy days, and spend some time crafting with your children.
